Many people start their journey with enthusiasm, motivation, optimism, and, unfortunately, with a misguided route that includes excessive exercise and/or some unbalanced diet. Or, they may not have any particular route in mind at all, other than following the usual advice to eat better and get some exercise.
If it were possible to arrive at one's goal using motivation and optimism alone, most people would never fail. But, experience shows that few people succeed this way. What they require on their journey to a better body shape, in addition to motivation and enthusiasm, is a proper roadmap.
The numbers (data) contained in a good weight-management program will provide you with such a roadmap. The numbers guide you
as you monitor your calorie intake and calorie expenditures, measure changes in your muscle and body fat levels, and work toward your goal by precisely modifying the balance between the calories you eat and burn each day, which is known as your energy balance.
The numbers empower you by giving you the flexibility to include any food you desire in your plan as part of a well-balanced diet. You can also choose activities that you enjoy, and you can select the rate of weight loss and/or muscle gain that is comfortably manageable for you.
Without this information to guide you and keep you on the right path, your journey quickly becomes nothing more than a hit-or-miss guessing game. When one path leads you nowhere, which path should you follow next? If it were possible to find your way to your destination without following the numbers, you would probably have arrived at your destination long ago.
The Quick-Fix Diet Industry stays rich by discouraging people from following the numbers in a proper weight management program. They sell more products by promising customers temporary results that do not require weighing, measuring, monitoring and modifying the elements of a legitimate weight management program. But, you can't manage what you don't measure! The result is that few people who achieve the best shape of their lives with these quick fixes do so for only a short period. Over 95% of people will return to their former out-of-shape condition, because they lack the proper roadmap to keep them from getting off the track.
Training to improve your shape shouldn't be a try-this-or-try-that method. There should be no unknowns, no surprises and no delays in scheduling your arrival at your goals exactly as you plan it.
